Goa looking for private participation of IFFI

PANAJI, AUG 12: Even as it aims for a public-private partnership to make the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) self-sustainable, Goa is looking to attract private participation in terms of sponsorship to organize IFFI 2006.

“We have expressed our desire to organize the festival on our own. Our idea is to make it more self-sustainable,” Nandini Paliwal, Chief Executive Officer of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) told The Hindu.

The ESG, a State-level body, organizes the IFFI along with the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF).

Goa has written to the Informational and Broadcasting Ministry about its desire to hold the festival on its own by 2008. At present, ESG looks after the infrastructure and logistics of the festival leaving the software part of the festival to the expertise of the DFF, Ms Paliwal said. “The State Government is keen on taking it over, but for something of this magnitude it will take time to develop the core competency,” she added. “By the next year, we will be ready to take up the software segment of the festival,” she added. The festival this year will be held from November 23 to Dec 3. This will be the third consecutive year that Goa is holding the festival. The State has been declared a permanent venue for the IFFI.

At the IFFI 2006 coordination committee meeting under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary J.P. Singh, it was decided that the festival would invite participation of various countries in its `Film Bazaar’ section.

Ms Paliwal said efforts were being made to contact countries for participation in the bazaar. The festival this year may see fewer entertainment events, which are considered a distraction from serious film screening.
