`Life meets Art' at the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts

Art and heritage combine together to form a formidable platform for the arts at IFFI Goa 2005. Organised by the Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG), the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts allows private houses in the heritage precinct to be opened up to visitors, turning homes into temporary art galleries. 45 artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, studio potters and printmakers synergize talent and expression to speak a voice of creativity, allowing visitors, artists and homeowners to meet and interact with one another.
Interesting competitions and workshops during the Festival as well as a never-before-put- together series of lectures by experts on art translate into interactive sessions. Starting today, Professor Sovon Som, an authority on the Bengal School of Painting will speak on Rabindranath Tagore's paintings, followed by Rajiv Lochan the Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi and Mumbai (Nov 30); Baiju Parthan on `Media and Contemporary Art' (Dec 1); H.H. Ranjitsinhji Gaikwad the Maharaja of Baroda on `Ravi Verma Collection' (Dec 2) and Jyoti Sahi on`Indian Christian Art' (Dec 3). All lectures will be held at Panjim People's, Fontainhas-Mala between 6.30pm to 7.30pm, followed by a `Meet the Artists' at 7.45 pm at the same venue.
A street furniture competition and also a `Matolli' Installation competition, a bonsai demonstration and workshop by horticulturist Daniel D'Souza in the Fundacao Oriente Garden today (Nov 29) will update audiences on the cultivation and maintenance of these little giants. Other artists to look forward to: Daniel Ferrao, Prasad Pankar, Ivan D'Souza, Shireen Mody, Yolanda D'Souza, Hitesh Pankar, Vasudev Shetty, Loretti Pinto, Ajay Gulati, Seby Jose Akkara, Norman Tagore, Rajendra Usapkar etc. Overloaded with nostalgia? Here's also your chance for a dekko of the world's most loved vintage cars on exhibit giving IFFI Goa 2005 a dose of old world charm. While Fontainhas gets into the news, installation fans can look forward to an avant garde fast forward into new age art. `Sea & See' by Subodh Kerkar at Candolim Beach is currently drawing rave reviews from lovers of art. The ordinary seascape comes alive every night fall with a play of colour, light, texture and imagination. The artist speaks with a voice heightened by vision and insight, taking his audience through flights of artistic fancy as the cool Arabian sea watches silently from the distance. A treat for the senses.
Open till Dec 3.Gear up then and have your fill!

Dolly Thakore, Theatre and media personality

"Goa is on my itinerary at least twice a year. I compèred the inauguration of IFFI 2004 and was here earlier this year with my play `Gaslight.' This time, I have rented a suite near Baga, along with a couple of friends, and hired a car. Since I can drive, I bring the car down every morning to INOX, watch films all day and drive back late at night."

"Goa has many nostalgic memories for me. It was here that I sought peace and reflection in 1970 when my life was at crossroads, after some unsuccessful films and an unsure future. Then, I spent many enriching moments here with my late wife, Jennifer. Soon after she died, I came here with my son Karan. The associations with Jennifer were so strong and brought back such a flood of bittersweet memories that I thought it was a mistake to come back here so soon after her passing away. Then, for years, I felt it was not much fun coming here alone. Now, I have come after a long time and have barely been here a day. IFFI 2005 looks promising. I caught Rituparno Ghosh's film `Antar Mahal' and am rushing to see `The Blue Umbrella.'

Celluloid whip crackers

This 36th International Film Festival of India pays tribute to women power. Women baiting the rebel
inside the imagination to explore human emotions. Opening up with the Brazilian Oscar hopeful `Olga' that drew rave reviews from movie lovers and critics, IFFI Goa 2005 showcases a retrospective of spunky French actress, Isabelle Hupert and the controversial enfant terrible, Italian director, Lina Wertmuller. Italian movie director and screenwriter, Lina Wertmüller is noted for comedies that focus on tensions between the sexes and on political and social issues. Born in Rome on August 14, 1928 to an aristocratic Swiss family, Wertmüller grew up as an enfant terrible, getting thrown out of more than a dozen Catholic schools. After graduation from the Academy of Theater in 1951, co-founded an experimental theater group, then worked with one puppet Theater Company. She then worked as a puppeteer, actress, stage manager, and writer before becoming assistant in 1962 to director Federico Fellini on his film (Otto e Mezzo). She's won the Locarno Film Festival Silver Sail Award in 1963, the Cannes Film Festival Best Director Award in 1972, and the Women in Film Crystal Award, 1985. Guided by her intelligence and intuition, French actress-director Isabelle Huppert is the most daring of contemporary French actresses in her choices in both the cinema and the theatre. Her strength of character unfailingly leads her to the most risky slopes. Which is what seduces us, as well as her almost childlike perseverance in creating an actress's destiny. If Isabelle is an actress who catches the light, then her light is inside herself.

* How does it feel to be on the other side of the camera?
Good and bad. Good because I got a chance to talk to such charming and passionate persons like Hema Sardesaai, who has such great love for and devotion to Goa. Bad because I need to chase legends like Om Puri, who has had to cancel two appointments for my shoot and I have yet to nab him.

* Have you been watching films?
How can I? It's been such a steady stream of visitors and delegates that all my time is spent getting bytes from them. How I wish my channel would allow me some breaks to see films. I am such a huge film buff!

* A film festival buff too?
Not yet. This is my first festival, although my film `Yatharth' was shown at some festivals, I did not get to attend them. Next time, I'm gonna be watching films and films and films!

* Has Goa been on your travel map?
Very much. I have come here at least thrice, but always on work. A major schedule of my serial `Krishna Arjun' was held here. Then, I was here to do Dinyar Contractor's play, `Who's Wife Is It Anyway?,' in which I acted. We did manage some time off, but it was mainly work.

* What does Goa mean to you?
Beaches, food, tourist destination, getaway…

* And IFFI?
The place for IFFI. So much fun, so much energy around…

* So, you're going to be here for IFFI 2006?
Don't know about that, but I'm gonna be here for New Year. All my friends come here every year for New Year. I'm the only 'weirdo' who has net done so. This time, we have made reservations in August. I want to unwind and really party next time.
