Old GMC to go commercial

PANJIM, SEPT 15 – The Entertainment Society of Goa has decided to put the Old Goa Medical College Building, where it is housed, to commercial use and shift base to the Food and Drugs Administration Building after the International Film Festival of India.

Sharing the minutes of ESG’s 18th Governing Body meeting to press persons on Friday, Chief Executive Officer of ESG Nandini Paliwal said the decision arose in view of the building lying vacant for most part of the year after the IFFI. “Tenders in this regard will be floated soon,” she informed.

“Efforts are on to make the film fest self-sustainable and this year we’re planning to raise Rs 5 crore through private sponsorships, much more than last year (Rs 1.72 cr),” Paliwal said.

Briefing on the pre-IFFI events, she said workshops on film journalism, film appreciation, film direction and screenplay have been chalked out in collaboration with the Department of Art and Culture. A short film-making contest for Goan artists will be held during the festival, she said.

A photography contest related to cinema will give an opportunity to those wanting to exhibit their work at the festival venues. Apart from all these, like last year, people will get to witness beach screenings.

Answering a question on film stars scheduled to participate during the festival beginning on November 23, Paliwal said nothing had been finalised, but names of Hrithik Roshan and Ritesh Deshmukh are among the major names proposed.

She maintained that the ESG in a bid to learn the finer aspects of film programming have selected two programmers with ‘filmy’ background and sent them to Delhi for further training. In the years to come these two will handle the total programming of the fest, she added.

Paliwal informed that they would interact with reputed regional film bodies across the country and seek their participation.

She said by October 15 we would know from the Directorate of Film Festivals the opening film to be screened and the content of the rest of the films scheduled for the festival. In all, five public theatres have been proposed for public screenings.

This year delegate registrations will be done online, the process for which has been initiated, Paliwal said.

Meanwhile, according to a PTI report, the ESG also came up with the suggestion of having a concert by Boney M and his troupe and a special music programme ‘Tributes to R D Burman’ with the participation of Asha Bhosle.

Besides this, the possibility of holding special music concerts of Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Ehsan and Loy, is also contemplated, she said.
