In 1996 she put her skills to work, co-writing two features, ‘Tammana’ and ‘Zakhm’, both directed by her mentor, the celebrated Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt (‘Zakhm’ went on to win two National Filmfare Awards). In 2006, Chandra has the distinction of presenting two feature films back to back, ‘Zindagi Rocks’ and ‘Hope and a Little Sugar.’ The latter marks Chandra’s first film in the English language.

Awards And Participation: New York - Verizon Audience Choice Award

Synopsis:  This film presents aspects of global identity while concentrating on the lives of an Indian family living in New York. The story is of a young and lost Indian youth who persists in a subterfuge that permits him entry into the close Sikh family circle of Saloni (Mahima Chaudhry), the married woman he is attracted to. Her father-in-law (Anupam Kher) is a retired Colonel whose pent-up animosity boils to the surface after 9/11 and gets focused on the young interloper. Says Chandra, "In the world we live in today, racial tension is something that we encounter on a daily basis, especially so after 9/11, an event that changed our world as we knew it. My movie is in the back drop of this event while dealing with a Muslim-Sikh love story." Bringing a South Asian’s perspective to the events surrounding 9/11, the film explores an array of emotions that emerged in its wake -- prejudice, loss, grief, rage and the need to carry on living. The making of the film was unusual from the start. The director and her shooting crew had not met till they arrived in New York for the shoot. Chandra said that she sent her script to Russow and Pardo by email, adding that even the editing was done through the internet. The film’s actors are a balanced mix of Indians and Americans. From India it stars Mahima Chaudhry, Anupam Kher, Suhasini Mulay, newcomer Amit Sial, and from New York Vikram Chatwal and Ranjit Chowdhry.
