Synopsis: A classical music student, Sanika (Amrita Subhash), who wants to break away from the shadow of her Guru, Ramabai (Reema Lagoo), who is also her mother. At one point of time, Sanika who is in search of her own vocal identity moves out of her music class and home, to achieve her goal.
After tasting failure along the way, Sanika with the help of her musician friend (Swapnil Bandodkar) achieves success and also wins the best singer award in light music. The young singer, who is eagerly awaiting accolades from the press and public, next day, is greatly saddened to see that all the limelight is garnered by her mother, who wins the prestigious Padmabhushan award.
The beautifully crafted climax has the mother shedding her teacher’s garb and showering all her appreciation on her estranged daughter in an television interview. The film ends with the daughter deciding that homecoming is the right option for her.
The film further draws a parallel between Sanika and her friend Radha (Urmila Kanitkar) who is also the disciple of Ramabai. Radha who has no inferiority complex about being groomed by the celebrated vocalist, manages to achieve what Ramabai had always dreamt for her daughter, thus providing altogether different emotional dimension to the mother-daughter relationship.
