T S Nagabharana (Director): Born in 1953, Bangalore (Karnataka). As a director whose every venture, be it TV serials or films, is proudly steeped in the ethos of this region, his presence in the Kannada film industry and on television has been that of a colossus zealously guarding the culture and tradition of a people. Nagabharana has lived up to his beliefs and ideals, as testified by his films. From `Grahana’ in 1978-79, which powerfully portrayed the barbaric practices of the caste system, to his latest `Chigurida Kanasu,’ which looked at the inevitable search for one's roots as the years go on, each one of his films have had a stimulating content, whose matrix has been the ethos, culture and customs of a people even as they have a universal appeal. `Anveshane,’ dealing with unemployment amongst the middle class, `Santa Shishunala Sharifa’ with its secular message of universal brotherhood, `Mysore Mallige,’ with its lyricism and music, `Chinnari Mutha,’ an endearing and educative children's film, `Janumada Jodi,’ on young love that transcends caste barriers, `Nagamandala,’ a folklore-based film that looks into love and fidelity in marriage, and `Neela,’ with its tribal girl who fights feudal tyranny for the sake of her village — Nagabharana's films are arresting for their impact, melody tunes, and, above all, for offering an end product that can be viewed by the entire family.Of the 28 films he has made so far, 14 have received prestigious awards at the State and national level. Six have been selected for the Indian Panorama. He has bagged the Best Regional Director Award at the national level seven times, and a like number of times at the State level. The Karnataka Nataka Academy and Puttanna Kanagal awards, the Berkeley award, and numerous other private recognitions from well-known organisations, including those abroad, have been his.

Synopsis:  `Kallarali Hoovaagi’ is based on a novel of the same name by B L Venu. It takes you back in the 18th century to the regime of Madakari Nayaka (Ambarish) the ruler of Chitradurga district, who belonged to the Palegara dynasty. Ambarish plays an important role in the film with his wife Sumalatha playing his counterpart and Vijaya Raghavendra plays a wandering youth who falls in love with Muslim girl, Uma Maheshwari. The two rulers undergo a turmoil because of this love affair between a Hindu youth and his Muslim lover. The two rulers are Hyder Ali, ruler of Old Mysore province, and chieftain Madakarinayaka. Madakarinayaka is regarded as a brave warrior who fought and resisted Hyder Ali?s invasion, besides trying to maintain unity in his province.
