Director Biography: Born in Skopje, former Yugoslavia, in 1959, Milcho Manchevski studied architectural history before moving to the U.S. to study film and photography at the University of Southern Illinois. Since completing his studies in 1982, Manchevski has worked as a writer and director for commercials, promotional films, documentaries, shorts, and music videos. His film `1.72’ won the Best Experimental Film Award at the Belgrade Alternative Film Festival in 1985 and the Best Film Award at the Split Film Festival in 1986. Manchevski is also a published writer of fiction, has worked as a journalist, and has directed over thirty music videos and commercials. ‘Before the Rain’ was Manchevski's debut feature.

Synopsis: The circularity of violence seen in a story that circles on itself. In Macedonia, during war in Bosnia, Christians hunt an ethnic Albanian girl who may have murdered one of their own. A young monk who's taken a vow of silence offers her protection. In London, a photographic editor who's pregnant needs to talk it out with her estranged husband and chooses a toney restaurant. She wants permanence with her lover, a prize-winning Macedonian photographer just back from Bosnia, changed by the violence. He leaves abruptly for his village; he's not visited in 16 years. There he tries to ignore bitter divisions between his Orthodox brethren and local Albanians, then tries to transcend them.
