Synopsis: Vinay (Dev Anand) lives with his father, a Police Commissioner (Nazir Hussain), and his mother in Mumbai. Vinay's father is quite upset with him as he has not learnt any skills, and spends all his time examining stones and jewelery. The city is being held to ransom by a daring jewel thief, who continues to baffle the police officers there. Vinay's father gets a pleasant surprise when Vinay secures employment with a leading jeweler Vishamber Nath. Vinay also gets to meet Nath's attractive daughter, Anju (Tanuja), and the two fall in love. This is short lived when several people greet Vinay as "Amar" or "Prince Amar". Things come to a boil when a young woman named Shalini (Vyjayanthimala) comes forward and claims that Vinay is her fiancée, and the accusation is substantiated by her brother (Ashok Kumar). Vinay is able to prove to them that he is indeed Vinay, and cooperates with them to locate this elusive Amar. Vinay masquerades as Amar to try to crack the gang, even as it appears that Amar too masquerades as Vinay.
Vinay finds himself embroiled in a devious scheme - that robs him of his sanity - makes lose his memory, identity, and makes him a target of every policeman in India and Nepal.
Finally, Amar turns out to be a piece of fiction, created by the real thief, Shalini’s brother, who turns out not be her brother. |
