The Escola Medico Cirurgica De Nova Goa, which in 1963 became the Goa Medical College, is the oldest modern medicine institution in Asia. In 1842, the Portuguese used the then nearly 150-year-old Palace to house a medical institution that has produced world renowned physicians and surgeons. Given a fresh lease of life following extensive renovations in 2004, the Old G.M.C building has been functioning as the administrative base for the International Film Festival of India, as also the administrative offices of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) and the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF).
