The award is presented by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, and the winner is honoured with:

This dazzling conclusion wraps up nine extraordinary days of celebrating storytelling and the vibrant spirit of global cinema. With over 200 films from 75 countries, insightful masterclasses by industry legends, and thought-provoking panel discussions, IFFI 2024 has highlighted the boundless potential and unifying power of cinema.

A Celebration of Indian Cinema

The Closing Ceremony of the 55th IFFI will showcase the vibrancy and diversity of India’s cinematic world, highlighting the finest moments of the festival. It will pay tribute to the artistry, creativity, and cultural influence of Indian films, both domestically and globally. The event will underscore cinema's unique ability to transcend boundaries and bring cultures together.

The ceremony will be graced by a distinguished array of film personalities, including iconic filmmakers and creators such as Sukumar, Dil Raju, Anand Tiwari, Amritpal Singh Bidra, and Australian producer Stephen Wolie.

Esteemed actors including Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandana, Jaya Prada, Shriya Saran, Pratik Gandhi, Sameer Kochhar, Shreya Chaudhary, Ritwik Bhowmik, and Navin Kohli will also be part of this star-studded evening, joined by celebrated musicians Amaal Mallik and Mame Khan. The Closing Ceremony will celebrate the finest cinematic achievements, with the most prestigious award of IFFI, the Golden Peacock, presented to the Best Feature Film of the festival. The winning director-producer duo will receive the Golden Peacock Trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize.

The Silver Peacock awards will also be presented for outstanding contributions in various categories, including Best Director, Best Actor (Male and Female), and Best Debut Feature Film by a Director, with winners receiving a Silver Peacock Trophy, a certificate, and cash prizes. Additionally, a Special Jury Award, recognizing excellence in any aspect of filmmaking, will be awarded with a Silver Peacock Trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize.

This year, a new award will spotlight Indian Debut Films with the Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film honor, celebrating the creativity and promise of emerging filmmakers.

In collaboration with the International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT), the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal will be awarded to films that embody the ideals of tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and peace. The recipient will receive the UNESCO Gandhi Medal and a certificate.

The legendary Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce will be presented with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award, which includes a Silver Peacock Medal, a certificate, a shawl, a scroll, and a cash prize, as a tribute to his remarkable cinematic career.

Allu Arjun will receive the Special Recognition Award for Contribution to Bharatiya Cinema for his monumental impact on Indian cinema, including his exceptional work in Pushpa 2. The Best Web Series (OTT) award will also be presented at the ceremony.

The evening will feature heartfelt reflections and conversations with industry legends, including the esteemed Indian director Ramesh Sippy, actor-producer Nivin Pauly, and actor Pratik Gandhi, offering unique insights into their illustrious careers.

The 25th anniversary of the iconic film Taal was celebrated in grand style at IFFI 2024. The event featured a special screening of the movie, followed by a press conference with the film's team, including director Subhash Ghai, singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, and actor Jividha Sharma.

In his opening remarks, Subhash Ghai noted the film's enduring appeal, stating, "It is rare to find someone who hasn't seen this movie, given its immense popularity even today."

Anil Kapoor, the film's lead actor, shared a heartfelt video message, saying, "Certain films have a long life and resonate deeply with audiences. When you're feeling down, Taal is the kind of movie you'd want to watch."

Actor Saurabh Shukla, also featured in the movie, praised Ghai in his video message: "Subhash Ghai is the Master Showman of the industry, known for creating magnum opuses. Watching Taal is essential to understanding his grand vision for the big screen."

Notably, Taal was the first Indian film to break into Variety’s top 20 box-office list. Recalling how he persuaded A.R. Rahman to compose the film’s music, Subhash Ghai said he told the maestro, "I want to make a musical film. That means you are the hero of my film, and I am its director."

Subhash Ghai highlighted the dedication of the artists during the making of Taal, revealing that Kavita Krishnamurthy sang for hours at a stretch to achieve the perfect tone.

Recalling her experience, the renowned singer shared, "I tried to sing in a way that would resonate not just with Indian audiences but also with listeners around the globe." She reflected on the superhit songs that became timeless classics from the film.

The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is hosting Safarnama, a multimedia exhibition, and celebrating India’s rich cultural diversity through performances by its Song & Drama Division. Held at Kala Academy, Panaji, Goa, these events are part of the IFFiesta program alongside IFFI 2024.

The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) has curated an impressive multimedia exhibition spanning over 3,000 square feet, offering visitors an immersive cinematic journey through virtual reality panels. This exhibition highlights India’s rich cinematic tradition and history, bringing the magic of Indian cinema closer to its audiences.

Adding to the celebration, IFFI 2024 features a vibrant series of cultural programs showcasing folk and classical dance forms from various regions of India. These performances, held at different festival venues, reflect the country’s diverse traditions and artistic heritage. Each dance form narrates unique stories steeped in regional customs, rituals, and spirituality, offering film enthusiasts a captivating artistic experience.

A major highlight of the event came when Mukesh Chhabra announced his partnership with Film Bazaar on two Co-Production Market (CPM) projects. The first, Baaghi Bechare (Reluctant Rebels), is a feature film for which he will provide casting services pro bono. The second, Chauhan's B n B Bed and Basera, is a web series that will also benefit from Chhabra’s casting expertise at no charge.

This collaboration underscores Film Bazaar’s ongoing dedication to fostering creative talent and strengthening industry connections.

WIP Awards

In addition to these exciting initiatives, the Work in Progress (WIP) Awards were presented to the following films:

• Kaatti Ri Raatti: Hunter’s Moon by Ridham Janve - Prasad Labs Award (50 hours of free 4K DI)
• Shape of Momo by Tribeni Rai - DI package valued at ₹6 lakhs from Nube Studio

Special Mentions were given to The Good, the Bad and the Hungry and The Red Hibiscus, both of which were awarded a 50% discount on 50 hours of DI from Prasad Labs.

Film Bazaar Recommends Winners

In line with the event’s vibrant and inclusive spirit, the top three winners in the Film Bazaar Recommends (FBR) category were each awarded ₹3 lakhs in sponsorship and promotional benefits.

A thought-provoking panel discussion, "Will Artificial Intelligence Alter Filmmaking Forever?" , took center stage today at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held at Kala Academy, Panaji. The esteemed panel included acclaimed Indian filmmaker and entrepreneur Anand Gandhi, Pragya Misra, Head of Public Policy and Partnerships at OpenAI, and was skillfully moderated by renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

The session began with Shekhar Kapur’s insightful opening remarks, where he highlighted the evolving nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI). “Nobody really knows what AI is; we are still in the process of exploring concepts like Machine Learning and Deep Learning,” he noted. Addressing the widespread concern about AI replacing jobs, Kapur shared a fascinating anecdote about his housemaid, who managed to create an impressive script for a sequel to Mr. India using AI tools. Drawing a parallel to the introduction of tractors, which were initially feared to displace farmers, he emphasized that technology should be viewed as a means to augment human potential. He likened this transformation to the digital revolution, citing the widespread adoption of UPI for payments as an example.

Pragya Misra showcased SORA, an advanced AI-powered text-to-video model capable of generating realistic videos from textual prompts. She demonstrated how SORA can transform simple instructions into visually intricate outputs, capturing human expressions and cultural nuances with remarkable detail.

Addressing the ethical dimensions of the tool, Misra highlighted safeguards in place, such as restricting the use of public figures’ likenesses to prevent misuse, including misinformation, hate speech, and ethnic discrimination. She emphasized that AI holds immense potential to empower creativity, serving as a transformative tool for creators and audiences worldwide.

When discussing AI's expanding role in filmmaking, Anand Gandhi emphasized that AI is poised to become an integral part of the creative process. He predicted that AI would evolve beyond a mere assistive tool to actively collaborate as a co-author in the making of films.

Overall, the panel agreed that the AI will potentially help the film makers in enhancing the film making process. But also, it will never replace the creative ingenuity of human mind.

The vibrant energy of youth, an electrifying atmosphere, and the unforgettable experience of 48 tireless hours defined the Closing Ceremony of Creative Minds of Tomorrow (CMOT) at Maquinez Palace during the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

CMOT has established itself as a premier platform for discovering and nurturing India’s brightest young filmmakers. This year marked a significant milestone, with the program expanding to include 100 young talents across 13 filmmaking disciplines—an impressive growth from 75 participants and 10 crafts in previous editions. The initiative received an overwhelming response, with nearly 1,070 entries showcasing exceptional talent from across India.

A standout feature of the event was the 48-Hour Filmmaking Challenge, where participants, divided into five teams of 20 members each, created short films on the theme “Relationships in the Age of Technology.” The challenge, held from November 21 to 23, 2024, spanned 12 locations within a 4-kilometer radius of Panjim, pushing teams to demonstrate their creativity, teamwork, and resilience under tight deadlines.

Commending the participants, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, remarked, “Creating such outstanding films within just 48 hours under immense pressure is a remarkable achievement. An initiative by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, CMOT has swiftly emerged as a leading platform for budding talent in the media and entertainment industry

In his inaugural address, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, emphasized the expanded scope of Creative Minds of Tomorrow (CMOT) this year. The initiative has grown to include 100 promising young talents from 13 filmmaking crafts, compared to 75 participants across 10 disciplines last year. "This year, CMOT provides a unique platform for young creators to showcase their talents and collaborate across diverse fields. It also serves as a gateway to Film Bazaar, paving the way for global opportunities and growth," he stated.

Neerja Sekhar, Special Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, expressed her pride in the steady evolution of Creative Minds of Tomorrow (CMOT). “Over the last four years, CMOT has become an aspirational platform for young filmmakers. This year, we are proud to showcase 13 diverse filmmaking crafts, reflecting the initiative’s growth and the rising enthusiasm among India’s youth for creative careers,” she said. Sekhar also highlighted the program’s role in driving economic growth and fostering innovation in the creative sector.

Former Secretary Apurva Chandra underscored the importance of the 48-hour filmmaking challenge, a signature feature of CMOT. “This challenge not only pushes your creative limits but also emphasizes teamwork. In this industry, success relies not just on talent but also on the ability to make your ideas marketable,” he noted. Chandra also acknowledged the growing recognition of institutions like SRFTI and FTII for their role in nurturing India’s creative talent

Mahima Kaul, Director of Public Policy at Netflix, spoke about the streaming giant’s collaboration with CMOT. “Netflix is proud to support CMOT through initiatives like the Voicebox program, which trains voice-over artists across India. Over 50% of participants are women, aligning with our goal of amplifying diverse voices,” she said. Kaul added that top CMOT performers will contribute to Netflix’s special project, Azaadi Ki Amrit Kahaniyan, which narrates stories from India’s independence movement.

He emphasized that this initiative by IFFI seeks to honor that rich legacy while inspiring young students by showcasing the cultural and artistic heritage woven into Indian cinema, encouraging them to explore its profound traditions and values.

Renowned actor Shri Nagarjuna, while engaging with the media, shared his heartfelt views on Indian cinema. For him, cinema transcends language and stands as a unifying force. He fondly spoke about the legacy of his father, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, and expressed deep admiration for the contributions of legendary figures like Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, and Tapan Sinha, whose work, he said, set unparalleled benchmarks in the world of cinema.

“As the national broadcaster, it is our responsibility to ensure clean family entertainment reaches all sections of society,” stated Shri Navneet Kumar Sehgal, Chairman of Prasar Bharati, during a press conference on the WAVES OTT platform at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. He explained that the need for an exclusive Prasar Bharati OTT platform led to the creation of WAVES.

Shri Sehgal emphasized that in addition to news and current affairs, the platform will offer a wide range of content, including games, showcasing India's rich cultural heritage and history. He also highlighted that WAVES is free to download, and most of its content can be accessed without charge, except for a select few premium offerings.

Shri Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of Prasar Bharati, emphasized the importance of the public broadcaster’s presence across all platforms to ensure information and entertainment reach audiences throughout the vast expanse of India. He added that WAVES OTT will serve as a valuable medium for Indians seeking to stay connected with their cultural roots, especially those living away from their homeland.

Fauji 2.0 to Premiere on WAVES OTT

The highly anticipated Fauji 2.0, a modern retelling of the iconic 1980s series that marked Shahrukh Khan’s debut, will be available on the platform. At a press briefing, producer Sandeep Singh, alongside lead actors Gauhar Khan and Vicky Jain, shared their excitement about the project. Gauhar Khan highlighted that Fauji 2.0 delves into the lives of those who dedicate themselves to protecting India. Vicky Jain reflected on Doordarshan's legacy, noting that shows like Ramayan and Mahabharat brought families together during the pandemic. He emphasized that DD continues to serve audiences without access to cable TV. Sandeep Singh, known for producing critically acclaimed films like Mary Kom, Aligarh, and Sarabjit, expressed pride in having his project showcased on Doordarshan’s platform.

Kakbhushundi Ramayana: A New Chapter in Storytelling

The original series Kakbhushundi Ramayana is another highlight on WAVES OTT and has also begun airing on DD National. Shri Shiv Sagar, grandson of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, shared details about the show, which draws inspiration from over 350 global versions of the Ramayana. "We’ve curated the finest stories and presented them in a fresh and engaging way for today’s generation," he said. Shiv Sagar also expressed enthusiasm about WAVES OTT, describing it as a fitting platform for sharing India’s rich history and cultural heritage with a wider audience.

This engaging course, designed exclusively for media delegates, focused on equipping participants with tools to analyze and critique films more effectively. It delved into various facets of the art and craft of cinema, emphasizing the importance of informed film analysis and appreciation.
