In 1981 Vienna, Perla, a dissident artist and single mother, struggles to build a stable life for her daughter Julia, a gifted young pianist. But when Julias estranged father reappears after years of absence, claiming to be gravely ill, Perla is forced to make a dangerous journey back to communist Czechoslovakia. This perilous return compels her to confront a past she thought she had left behind, jeopardizing her present to protect her future.
Alexandra Makarova (1985, Czechoslovakia) is a Slovak-Austrian screenwriter and filmmaker born into a family of artists from Russia and Greece. She moved to Vienna to live with her mother, the painter Saša Makarová, and studied screenwriting and directing at the Film College Vienna. Break My Heart (2018), her film about Slovakian Roma begging in Vienna, was her feature directorial debut and won the Romy Award for best production in 2019. Perla will have its world premiere at IFFR 2025.
